There is never not a good time to watch a Barbie movie. For many members of Generation Z, Barbie was playing on our VHS tapes all day every day. There’s nothing like a fun, strong heroine going on exciting adventures with her swoony love interest and enjoyable (or cringe-worthy) animal companions.
Even if you only have one hour and fifteen minutes to spare each month, I have curated a year-long list of what Barbie movie matches the vibe of the month. Enjoy!
January: The Magic of Pegasus
There’s no better option! A movie of ice skating, snow, an adventure through the icy mountains, and a polar bear companion, The Magic of Pegasus screams January. This movie has me longing for blizzards, a breath of winter air, and sneaking out with a pair of translucent pink ice skates in hand. This is an iconic winter movie, so grab a warm drink and light the fire to enjoy.
February: Rapunzel
This was a harder choice, but Rapunzel gives purple vibes (from the dresses to the dragons), and February is just a purple month if you understand. Amethyst, violets, it just seems like the right choice. This is a cozy movie with the perfect sound design. If you’ve seen this, you know what I mean? Every footstep? Chef’s kiss.
March: The Diamond Castle
I believe this is the perfect feature for the turn of spring. Honestly, not my favorite Barbie movie (major plot holes and love interests not quite hitting the mark), but still a good one. When I think of this movie, I think cottage core, I think flower fields, I think storms and fresh air, and new blooms. This movie just makes you want to venture out into the woods and start making a bouquet and singing with a guitar, and I love that.
April: The Princess and the Pauper
I can’t explain this one, but the butterflies and the pastel colors of the dresses are giving April. A chillier vibe than summer, what with the cloaks and disguises and riding off in carriages in the middle of the night.
May: Fairytopia
There is nothing more springtime than fairies living in the Magic Meadow. They live in a garden, for heaven’s sake! With rainbows around every corner and flowers as far as the eye can see, this fairy adventure is perfect for the month when it finally gets warm and nature comes alive.
June: Mermaidia
What better way to finish May’s Fairytopia than June’s Mermaidia? When spring turns to summer, you know it’s mermaid month! This is such a warm movie, in terms of the season. Whenever I watched this movie as a kid, I longed to be swimming through the waters of Mermaidia, eating magical berries and splashing in the cove’s summer heat and blue currents.
July: A Mermaid Tale
We’re not done with mermaids yet! A Mermaid Tale not only has that, but also surfing, and if that doesn’t showcase the peak of summer, I don’t know what does. It makes me want to run out on the beach, feel the hot sand between my toes, and clap along singing, “Surf’s up, bow down! She’s the queen of the waves.”
August: The Island Princess
An island, high seas adventure, and seaside kingdom are the perfect sum of an August movie. With animal companions like a peacock, red panda, elephant, and monkey, they are the perfect addition to Barbie’s island home! Her sun-bleached hair and island-inspired dresses throughout the movie are stunning and oh-so-summery. I’d love to watch this movie after a picnic and watch the sunset. It’s that kind of warmth.
September: Swan Lake
This ballet-inspired story is the perfect pick for the last month of summer, as the days are still long but just a little bit shorter. The story even opens on a summer camp with constellations up above! Cygnus can be seen in the northern hemisphere from June to December. Sunrises give way to swans and forest magic and disguises, and of course, the iconic nighttime dance with Odette and Daniel. As fireflies and forest friends dance with the happy couple, I think this is the right option as the trees hold onto their leaves and color for just a little while longer, and we say goodbye to a summer of baked treats and lounging by the lake.
October: The Three Musketeers
It’s the season of thrilling scenarios and extravagant costumes, and I’m going to claim that Barbie and the Three Musketeers has all of that and more. Our heroines disguise themselves at the masked ball with the perfect outfits for dancing and dueling. With a plot to kill the king, maids doubling as musketeers, and smuggled weapons, this exciting adventure is perfect for this time of year.
November: The Twelve Dancing Princesses
We’re coming back into cozy season, and what better way to begin it than with a world that looks like it was born from a dream? Colorful, festive dresses and late-night escapades to the golden world waiting beneath their magical floor leave you wanting to find your own dancing shoes and join in the fun. While I don’t think this movie is necessarily the perfect one for November, I wanted to include it in this list, and I think the end of fall is as good a place as any.
December: The Nutcracker
I think you all knew what was going to be our December movie (sorry to my Christmas Carol girlies out there). The original Barbie movie Barbie in the Nutcracker is the most classic of all, pulling its music and inspiration from Tchaikovsky’s famous Christmas-themed ballet. You can’t make this any more December relevant. I mean, it takes place on Christmas! So grab a hot cocoa, cuddle under a blanket, and enjoy this story of mice, sugar plum princesses, and nutcracker kings.
